Clay Haus Restaurant

2nd Investigation

Somerset, OH

Investigation Start: 2100 (9:00pm)

Investigation End: 0430 (4:30am)

Investigators:  Ryan Wyse, Jeremy Weekly, Dave Smith, & Kyle Weekly

Site Demographics:

The building's construction date is unknown, but looks to be built in the late 1800's. The county auditor's office does not have any actual construction dates of any buildings built prior 1900.  It is a two story, brick frame home, with a basement that has been converted into a restaurant.  Next to this structure is another home, which was purchased by the Clay Haus.  A walkway connecting the two buildings was built, so they could create additional seating for their customers.  An interesting note about the buildings is that the first floor of the structures were not the original first floor.   During the time period that these buildings were built, the roadway in the town was actually lower, but was raised later in the years.  Therefore, the basements of these buildings at one time was the first floor.  The layout of the main building consists of seating area, restroom, utility room, bar area, and store room in the basement.  The main floor consists of seating area, a salad bar area, a restroom, and the kitchen.  The second floor consists of one large dining room for parties and such.  This room was one time split into two rooms and a hallway, but was removed during renovation.  A single staircase connects these floors together.  The secondary building consists of seating area on the main floor and storage in the basement and attic area.

Investigation Report

Claims of Activity

Basement - Witness of three full body apparitions standing at the base of the staircase by two employees, feeling of being touched in the bathroom, and an uneasy feeling in the utility room.

Main Floor - Full body apparition of woman in main dining area, feeling of being watched in kitchen, phantom knocking on exit door in kitchen, and seeing movement and shadow figures out the corner of your eye.

Second Floor - Movement of objects, feelings of being watched, and movement & shadow figures out the corner of your eye.

Equipment Location

  • 4 static IR cameras were placed in the building, one on the second floor covering most of the room and the doorway and another covering the stairwell leading to the upstairs dining room, one in the main dining room pointing towards the stairwell and salad bar area, and one in the basement covering the dining area.  These all are linked back to a DVR security system.

  • Wireless audio was placed on the second floor.

  • Each investigation crew carried a Sony Nightshot Handicam, digital voice recorder, EMF/K-2 Meter, and digital thermocouple thermometer.

  • 2 separate thermal imaging sweeps were performed as well.

Investigation

  • During an EVP session on the second floor with investigators Dave and Kyle, Dave asked that if any entity was in the room if it would please speak into the voice recorder or pass in front of the K-2 meter.  Immediately, the K-2 meter in front of them began to go off.  We also had a K-2 meter sitting stationary in that room with a Hi-8 camera fixed on it throughout the night.  This K-2 also went off at the same time, however, the EMF was not as high as it was with the one infront of them.

  • Later on in the evening, the stationary K-2 meter spiked twice in a row as if something passed in front of it and then passed back. No one was in this room at the time.

  • While investigators Dave and Kyle were in the basement, a shadow passed from right to left infront of the camera.  We are not calling this a true piece of evidence just yet.  We were lucky enough to have a static IR camera recording behind Kyle during this, which recorded the incident.  The static IR footage clearly shows that Kyle did not move his hand or anything else in front of the IR illuminator during this time to create this effect and he was standing still the entire time.  What we can't figure out is why the handheld camera captured the shadow, but the static IR camera did not. Another visit to this location to attempt to debunk this footage is definitely in order.

  • On the 2nd floor, the same breathing sound that was captured during the first investigation was also captured again.  The odd thing about this sound is that it only occurred once during the first investigation, but occurred 4 times during this investigation.  During this investigation, it occurred twice for Dave and Kyle, once for lead investigators Ryan and Jeremy, and once while no one was up there.  Wireless audio recorded all night in that room on both investigations.  One of the incidents of this happening is below.

  • During the entire night, random, unexplainable EMF hits occurred in the basement around the bar area for both investigation teams.  Some of these could be debunked, but some of them could not.  One incident occurred where it seemed that investigators Kyle and Dave were able to make contact with the previous owner for a short period of time.

  • Three times that night, the sound of coffee cups clanking together was heard in the basement.  All incidents were when the teams were either in the stairwell or on the first floor.  They were loud enough that the team could hear it in the basement.  All these were captured on the digital voice recorder in the basement.

Director's Report

Like the last time we investigated here, this investigation went very well.  We were able to have some different experiences than last time and capture some different evidence. We still believe that there is some paranormal activity associated with this location.  Some of it seems to be intelligent while other times it seems to be residual.  Either way, odd occurrences still happen at this restraunt.  Although we did not capture any true EVPs this time other than the phantom breathing noises, we were able to capture quiet a bit more EMF hits.  Once conclusion we gather from both these investigations is that the paranormal activity seems to occur almost immediately upon beginning the investigation, but tapers off around 01:00 to almost nothing.  We also noted that during the first investigation, the 2nd floor and the staircase were the hotbed of the activity that night.  This investigation, however, shifted away from the staircase and went more towards the basement.  If anyone has any additional information about this location, please feel free to contact me at ryan@ohiostateparanormal.com.
