Type of Hauntings

There are many different types of hauntings that people have created to describe the events that are out there.  In this article, we are going to talk about four different types that we feel are the most prevalent and our beliefs in them.  The  different hauntings that we most associate with them are an intelligent (spirit) haunt, a demonic haunt, a residual haunt, and a poltergeist type haunt.

The first haunting we will discuss is probably the most discussed, which is the intelligent haunt.  This is when the spirit of a person who has passed away remains earthbound.  This spirit can be that of a loved one who wishes to stay attached to someone, a spirit who is attached to a certain object and follows it wherever it goes, or a spirit who wishes to remain at a location.  When called to assist a client, a thorough background investigation MUST be completed.  OSP cannot effectively assist the client with his/her possible haunting if we can't pinpoint how the haunting is occurring.  If the spirit is attached to the person, the activity that occurs will most likely not happen in only one given location.  The activity will follow the person at home, to work, or in your car.  Other people may not experience this activity unless they are around the "haunted" person.  This is why our background investigator must interview the client and the others associated with the case to determine this, such as recent loved ones passing on, etc.  In the case of a object the spirit is attached to, simply removing the object from the location will stop the activity.  The background investigator must interview the client to see if any new articles have been brought into the location, such as purchasing something from an auction, antique store, etc.  In cases of haunted locations, the spirit likes to remain there and anyone who is in the location may experience this phenomenon.  The investigator must interview the client to see if anyone has passed away at the location or someone who was deeply attached to the location has passed on.  It is believed that blessing the location by a priest or simply taking back the location yourself by talking to the spirit and letting it know that they are not welcome seems to work in most cases.  Intelligent haunts are the type that we most commonly seem to be called to.  These spirits can do just about anything that they could when they were alive. That is, they can move objects, make noises, manifest to show themselves in their human form, or communicate vocally whether directly or through our EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) recordings.  When a client begins to witness paranormal phenomenon of this type, it is believed that the spirit is attempting to communicate or simply get one's attention.  They may be doing this because they are angry at you, want to give a message, or simply they are upset that they are dead and don't want you to forget them.  Whatever the reason may be, our background investigator must do a thorough job in their detective work in an attempt to find this out, so we may know which route to take with the supposed spirit.

Another type of haunting is that of a residual haunt.  It is believed that a residual haunt is where, for an unknown reason, the same type of paranormal activity occurs in the same location, at the same time.  For instance, if you witness the same apparition of a woman walk out of your bedroom and straight through the wall in the same manner, this is what is considered to be a residual haunt.  This activity is best described as a broken record player, where it continues to play the same thing over and over again.  This activity will occur whether a person is there to observe it or not and nothing that a person can do will influence or change it.  Some people believe that there is some sort of psychic or spirit energy trapped which allows this to occur.  Others believe that it is some sort of time rift where we are actually witnessing an event that occurred in the past.

A poltergeist haunting is described as a type of haunt where the spirit is mischievous and does things to upset you or scare you just for fun.  However, I have a slightly different feeling about this type of haunt.  Just because a coffee cup was thrown across the room or a chair slid out from the table, I don't necessarily label this a poltergeist haunt.  I feel this could still be an intelligent haunt where the spirit is trying to get your attention for some reason.  Now, when I get a report where a person walks out of a banquet hall and returns 2 minutes later to find all the chairs stacked up on top of themselves, I look at this as a poltergeist haunt.  I look at a poltergeist is a type that does things mischievously, but can do things that a normal person could not, such as stack 25 chairs on top of each other in a pyramid in a matter of 2 minutes.  Other things such as moving multiple items in different locations at the same time is what I also consider poltergeist activity.  Where this actually comes from, I am not for sure.  Is it demonic or is it from some other type of entity we do not know about?  I don't know, but I want to find out.

The last type we will talk about is a demonic type of haunt.  This is the least likely to occur and needs to be handled with kid gloves.  This is when a demon either haunts a location or an individual for an unknown reason.  Theories suggest that a demon may haunt a location due to a portal located their.  Theories also suggest that a demon may haunt an individual, because they are weak or have troubles in their life that it may feed off of.  Demons do this to gain control of a person's life, ruin the person's life for fun, or to protect their portal to hell.  Either way, this type of haunt can be extremely dangerous and may take much more help then one may be able to offer.  Demons can enter your mind and take control, physically attack you, or manipulate your thoughts.  A demon will do whatever it can to take control of your soul, so they may have it for themselves.

In conclusion, these are the four different types of haunts that are usually labeled to describe one's haunting.  There are many other types of hauntings out there, but most of them can fall under one of these categories as well. We are hear to find the answers to how and why these types of activity truly exist.  Since no one has been able to just sit down and talk with a spirit to find out the answers, we don't really KNOW why this stuff truly exists.  When it comes to intelligent spirit activity, I do believe that one may wish to visit loved ones or locations before they cross over.  I believe that they may also be afraid of what may happen on the other side, so they opt to remain here on earth where they are more comfortable.  One question I also have is this; "When one crosses over to the other side, can they return to us anytime they feel?  The reason I want this answered is because of my own personal experiences.  My sister was tragically killed in an automobile accident when she was 24 years old.  Within a week of the accident, paranormal activity began to arise at my parents house.  This activity ranged in many different things and was experienced by both my parents and myself.  Interestingly, this activity was very frequent after the accident and continued for about 6 months to a year.  However, after a year, the activity began to subside.  Now my mother hardly ever reports any activity to me and only experiences an incident about once a month, if that.  Why?  That is what we must figure out.  Why do residual haunts truly occur.  I have a hard time believing that it could be from some psychic energy trapped there.  If it is from some sort of time rift, why is it taking place?  Why is it choosing the exact same event every time?  These are the questions I want answered and am striving to put together.
